With school events cancelled off across the globe, Rafflesia International School Kajang forged ahead with our recent Words for Our Word poetry slam by hosting live it online. Guest judges included Dhinesha Karthigesu, Malaysian National Poetry Slam Champion and host of The Creative Curry Podcast alongside Emily Thomas, co-founder of MY Poetry School. The event was co-hosted by Year 11 student Twilight Siew and Rafflesia English Teacher Cat Brogan – a BBC Edinburgh Fringe Slam Winner.
In line with Rafflesia’s Go Green initiative, the theme encouraged environmentally conscious performances that allowed the young poets to offer their perspective on our world. After the event, judge Dhinesha Karthigesu commented: “The Words for Our world Poetry Competition left me in awe of the calibre and ability of the students involved. Rafflesia International School should be proud and commended for helping to usher in a new wave of inter-school competition in light of the pandemic.” Certainly, we believe that the event created a blueprint for how students can connect virtually, attract a wide audience and generate a permanent record of their creativity.
