Every year on the 5th Day of 5th Month in the traditional lunar Chinese Calendar, there is a day of grand celebration to commemorate the death of a great Chinese poet Mr. Qu Yuan. This particular day was called “Duanwu Festival” in English or “端午节” in Chinese.
The day is celebrated by eating “zongzi” (glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) and dragon boat racing.
On June 3rd 2014, without a lake or river, Rafflesia International School, Puchong held its first land-based ‘Rafflesia Dragon boat race’ on the basketball court, for the celebration of the “Duanwu Festival”. Classes from Year 3 and above participated, each sending a representative team to compete. Using their own ideas, each team created a dragon boat using cardboard boxes and other recycled materials.
Just like all other dragon boat races, teamwork is important in order to win the race. Co-ordinated footwork and movement is vital for the team to move in a uniform manner. All particpating teams were given the chance to practice before the event. During the race, all students were very excited and gave their loudest cheers to their classmates.
The race ended on a high note, Mr. Remus congratulated the students on their hard work in making the dragon boats, their Sportsmanship and competitive spirit during the Dragon Boat Race.
